Frequently Asked Questions

Below you’ll find answers to the questions we get asked the most about Private Singing Lessons and Vocal Coaching.

How can I learn to sing online?

We can have face-to-face singing lessons in the comfort of our own homes by using the Zoom online meeting facility.  I help you to set-up your smartphone, tablet or laptop by talking you through the process on the phone. I send you a link, which you click, then we will be able to see and hear each other. It’s a wonderful way to stay connected and keep singing!

Can anyone learn to sing?
Yes. I believe anyone who has the ability to speak can learn to sing or improve his or her singing ability with proper technique and guidance. Singing simply requires acquiring physical coordination just as other physical activities such as learning to play a musical instrument, dancing, typing or anything else you can think of! All that is ever needed is practice, persistence, and patience. And a good teacher; that’s where I come in!!

I was told I am tone deaf. Can this be changed?

I don’t believe people are tone deaf. I believe they either haven’t been taught how to hear pitch or they are producing sound in a physical way that doesn’t allow them to control pitch. I have proven this hundreds of times with my clients over the years. It only takes retraining the body in the way it creates sound and the hearing will adjust as well.

I’m already a professional singer so why should I take voice lessons?

Most singers I work with have some particular habits that if not corrected can cause problems later in their careers. My job is to educate the singer and instill good technique and habits that will prevent any physical problems such as nodules, polyps, hoarseness, or vocal fatigue.
Is it possible to gain more range in my voice and better tonal quality?

Definitely! There is always more that one can gain in one’s voice once any restrictions are removed. Even the most renowned singers understand this and will usually continually consult with a vocal coach to ensure they are reaching their maximum potential.

Do you work with all styles of music and levels of singers?

Yes. Proper technique can be used in any style of singing and there is no sound in singing that can not be created so as not harm the voice. I work with all levels of singers from total beginners to many well established professionals.

If I don’t live in the Greater Manchester area, is there a way to still work with you?

I offer Skype singing lessons. You just need a microphone, a webcam and a good speed of internet connection and we can work together wherever you are.

What if I need to Cancel or Rearrange My Singing Lesson?

As long as you give 24 hours’ notice under any circumstances including illness, there is no charge; unfortunately if the notice period is less the full lesson fee is due at Mags’s discretion as she won’t be able to fill your slot.

How Many Vocal Coaching Sessions Will I Need?

If you are a complete beginner then you will most likely start to feel a significant improvement after 6 singing lessons; it is recommended you attend a minimum of once a fortnight, preferably once a week, in order to maintain continuity between vocal tuition sessions and to develop at a good pace. At least 12 voice lessons are likely to be needed to feel you are truly a “singer” and on-going vocal coaching is helpful to maintain and continuously improve your voice, breathing and posture.

If you have some degree of confidence and feel that you can sing quite well then on-going singing lessons are a great way to improve all round and get to the level where you can perform one or more songs to a high level, with confidence, in front of others. However, as a guide, a block of 3-6 voice lessons will allow you to “nail” at least one song and gain all-round skill development that you can then apply to other songs in your own time. Why not give yourself a goal – we can create one together and work towards it. There’s nothing more motivating!

If you are a good, quite confident singer, perhaps semi-pro or professional, it may be that you want to just tweak, fine-tune and develop particular aspects of your voice or technique to be the best that you can be. Bring your own material if you wish or any songs that you need help with and we will assess how long it will take to achieve your desired sound and the strategy to get you there – it may take anything from just a single hour of vocal tuition or more; or you may want on-going support with your current singing projects. Longer singing lessons are available if you need results in a short space of time. If you are going into the recording studio or to an audition then support can be given to prepare or Mags can even accompany you.

When Can I Have Vocal Tuition?

During the week and at weekends from 09:00h until 21:00h. Singing lessons can be booked in a regular slot or we can vary the day and time from lesson to lesson depending on your availability.
